When Healing Hurts

I have some friends who are going through some very difficult times as they maneuver through healing & growth.  Watching them agonize over the pain involved, in God putting the broken pieces back together, is a lot like watching a doctor reset a broken bone: it looks and hurts like hell, yet has to be done in order for complete healing to take place.

Psalm 51:17 says:

“…A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise”

We often pray Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

However, we tend to leave out a key verse above both of them:

Psalm 51:8
“Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken may rejoice.”

While our hearts should certainly long for God to create a new heart in us, it is important to understand what we’re asking for here! The work involved in the cleansing/healing process isn’t pretty, easy or painless.

There are (4) parts of the journey to healing I would like to address:

  • TIME: It takes time to heal. Something broken in an instant, unfortunately, doesn’t heal instantly; it takes time. God doesn’t give us a time table for which we will heal, but he does promise to heal us!  “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Ecclesiastes 3:11
  • SKILL: I’m not talking about our skill-I’m talking about God’s skill! His keen ability to make something beautiful from something broken! “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8
  • LOVE: Again, I’m not talking about human love-I’m talking about Jesus who IS Love. His love envelops all that we are & surrounds us even in the deepest of pain. “Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. Psalm 23:6a
  • PERSEVERANCE: It takes perseverance on our part to get through the healing process!  God gives us all we need, & requires that we persevere through it, relying on Him for our strength! “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:3-5

My precious friend, if you are walking a God-journey that looks & hurts like hell, I hope you will keep these truths in mind.  If you’re feeling alone in your journey & need someone to pray with you, will you allow me to come along side of you & encourage your heart?  You may comment below, publicly, or you may private message me here: My Heart, His Words.

You are NOT alone, God WILL bring healing & you ARE loved!

Barbie, I couldn’t agree more! It’s in our brokenness that we often see our need for God the most. Praying for you that you will feel the presence of the Holy Spirit surrounding your heart today & that He will meet you at your deepest need! Much Love ♥
