Learning to Breathe Again: A New Perspective on Prayer & Contentment
Philippians 4:6-7, 2 Timothy 3:16, Genesis 2:7
Hello Friend!
There are truths we learn early in our faith.
And then there are truths God brings back around, not to teach us something new, but to lead us deeper into what we thought we already understood.
Prayer has been one of those truths for me, especially as I’ve been learning how deeply prayer and contentment are connected.
Growing up in a Christian home, I was taught that prayer is our communication with God. We bring our requests before Him, just as Philippians 4:6 instructs, and we trust Him to respond according to His will. That foundation is good. It is biblical. It is necessary.
And I am realizing now… it is only the beginning.
There is a depth to prayer that cannot be learned through instruction alone. It is something that must be experienced, practiced, and slowly unfolded
in the presence of God.
A Perspective That Shifted Everything
In May of 2023, while attending the Marked Women’s Conference at Mercy Culture, I heard a simple phrase that completely reframed how I see prayer.
It was not long. It was not complex. But it carried weight.
Prayer is:
Inhaling the presence of God…
Exhaling the power of God.
I wrote it down. I revisited it. I sat with it.
And if I am being honest, it did not immediately sink in.
But over the past three years, as I slowed down and began sitting with the Lord instead of striving for Him, something shifted within me. What once felt like a beautiful phrase became a lived reality.
This was not just language.
It was an invitation.
God’s Word Is His Breath
Scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “All Scripture is God-breathed.”
Not inspired from a distance. Not written and left behind.
God-breathed.
Alive. Active. Present.
Then in Genesis 2:7, we are given an even more intimate picture: “Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…”
God did not simply create life.
He breathed it.
That same breath, the very essence of His life and presence, is what we encounter when we come to His Word. It is not information to be consumed. It is life to be received.
Prayer Is Not Only Speaking…
It Is Receiving
For much of my life, I approached prayer primarily as me speaking to God.
I would bring my needs before God, process my thoughts, and ask Him for direction. And while those things matter, I have come to see that prayer is just as much about receiving as it is about releasing.
Before we ever exhale anything to God, He is inviting us to inhale Him first.
His Word.
His presence.
His truth.
His peace.
There is a posture shift that happens here. Prayer is no longer driven by urgency or performance. It becomes anchored in connection.
And this is where everything begins to change.
From Striving to Abiding
In this season, the Lord has been gently pulling me out of striving and inviting me into abiding.
Not performing.
Not proving.
Not trying to get it right.
Simply staying close.
And in that place, I have begun to recognize something I had not fully understood before:
This is where prayer and contentment begin to align in a deeper way.
This reminds me of something I shared in my reflection on From Grit to Mercy: When Strength Gives Way to Being Held, where the Lord began shifting my heart from striving to resting in His presence.
Contentment grows where we learn to breathe with Him.
Striving holds its breath; It tightens, pushes, and tries to produce.
But abiding breathes; It receives, rests, and remains.
Contentment is not something we achieve through effort. It is something that grows naturally when our lives are rooted in His presence.
Praying Scripture: Breathing in His Life
One of the most powerful practices the Lord has anchored me in is praying Scripture.
Because when we pray His Word, we are not simply choosing meaningful language. We are engaging with what is already alive.
We are aligning our hearts with truth that does not shift with circumstance. We are reminding our souls of what is eternal. We are allowing His Word to recalibrate what we believe, what we feel, and how we respond.
In a very real way, we are inhaling the breath of God.
And Then… We Exhale
From that place of receiving, we begin to respond.
Not from fear.
Not from pressure.
Not from urgency.
But from fullness.
When we exhale in prayer, we release what has already been formed within us through His presence.
Faith instead of fear.
Truth instead of lies.
Peace instead of striving.
Authority instead of helplessness.
We are no longer trying to produce something through effort. We are releasing what we have already received through intimacy.
Where Prayer and Contentment Meet
Contentment is not found in everything being resolved or everything going according to plan.
It is found in alignment.
This is the place where prayer and contentment are no longer separate, but deeply connected.
It is found in a heart that has settled into this truth:
I do not have to force anything. I only need to remain connected to Him.
Breathing in His presence.
Breathing out His power.
Again and again and again.
An Invitation for You
Maybe prayer has started to feel like something you should do, and you’ve struggled to find the connection between prayer and contentment in this season…
If that is you, I want you to consider something gently.
What if God is not asking you to pray harder?
What if He is simply inviting you to breathe again?
To release the pressure.
To lay down the striving.
To step out of performance.
And to come close.
My Prayer For You
Jesus,
I lift up the woman reading this right now. You see her fully. You know the places where she feels tired, stretched, and unsure of how to keep going.
Would You draw her back into Your presence in a way that feels gentle and safe?
Teach her how to breathe with You. To receive Your truth, Your peace, and Your life, and to release everything she was never meant to carry.
Remind her that she does not have to strive to reach You, because You are already near.
Let contentment begin to grow within her as she learns to rest, abide, and remain in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I Would Love to Hear From You! Yes, YOU!
If this reflection resonated with you, I would truly love to hear from you. Feel free to share in the comments if you’ve experienced a season where the Lord has gently shifted your perspective on prayer; moving you from striving into a deeper place of abiding, where you’ve begun to experience His presence in a more personal, life-giving way. Sometimes hearing one another’s stories reminds us that we are not alone in the way God meets us and draws us closer to Himself.
If you enjoy conversations like this, my sweet friend Sarah and I explore many of these themes on our podcast, Spirit-Filled Girl Talk. Our heart is to create honest, Christ-centered conversations that help women grow deeper in their walk with the Lord.
We also created a private Facebook community for listeners called Christian Women Growing in Sisterhood. It’s a place where women can continue the conversation, encourage one another, and grow together in faith.
If you’d like to join us there, we would absolutely love to welcome you.
