holy spirit comfort in seasons of longing

When the Soul Groans: How the Holy Spirit Comforts Us in the Waiting

Hello Friend!

Holy Spirit comfort often meets us in the places where our hearts groan the most. There’s a kind of longing every human heart eventually encounters. Scripture calls it groaning; the place where Holy Spirit comfort often meets us most tenderly. Not the groaning of despair, but the deep ache of knowing that this world, as beautiful as it can be, cannot fully satisfy the soul.

The apostle Paul describes it this way:

“For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling.” 2 Corinthians 5:2

When I first read that verse years ago, I understood it intellectually. But it wasn’t until I experienced deep loss in my life that I truly understood what Paul meant.

When Loss Reveals Our Longing

The first time I became painfully aware that this world cannot satisfy the soul was after losing my mom. She passed away just three years after my dad, and losing both of my parents so close together shook something at the core of who I was.

For the first time in my life, I felt something I had never felt before: I felt orphaned. My parents had been such a present part of my life and my faith story. Their love, their wisdom, and their guidance had always been there. And suddenly they weren’t.

That moment forced me to confront something deeply personal about my faith. I could no longer lean on the faith of my parents. Their faith had carried them through their lives, but now my belief system had to stand on its own. I realized that my relationship with God had to be mine. I alone was responsible for how I would walk with Him and for how I would live a life that pleased the Lord.

And in that realization, something else became very clear. The world offers a lot of sparkly distractions. It promises satisfaction through success, comfort, relationships, or control. But none of those things can truly fill the ache of the soul. A life without Jesus will always leave us longing for more.

But a life lived with Jesus leads somewhere very different. It leads to surrender. And surprisingly, it leads to contentment.

Holy Spirit Comfort Meets Us in the Ache

After losing my mom, the emptiness inside of me felt overwhelming. There were moments when I could sense how easily grief could have consumed me if I allowed it. But something beautiful happened in that season.

Holy Spirit met me there.

In that season, I began to understand the deep Holy Spirit comfort that meets us inside our grief.

Not by removing the ache, but by offering the deep Holy Spirit comfort that only He can give. He met me through His Word. He met me through the guidance of a Spirit-filled grief counselor. He met me through the steadfast love and devotion of my husband.

In another reflection, I wrote about the moment when strength gives way to being held by God’s mercy. If that resonates with you, you may appreciate this post on From Grit to Mercy: When Strength Gives Way to Being Held.

Looking back, I can see so clearly now what Paul describes in Romans 8. Scripture says Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26). That means when our hearts don’t even know how to pray, the Spirit carries our burdens to God.

Holy Spirit does not stand at a distance from our pain. He meets us inside it.

When Longing Begins to Change

For a long time, I believed the goal of faith was to reach the end of the hard season as quickly as possible. I wanted the lesson learned, the problem solved, and the story tied up in a neat bow.

But what God has been teaching me recently is something very different. The season of challenge itself is often the very thing shaping us. When we fixate on a specific outcome, we can unintentionally hold onto control instead of fully surrendering the process to the Lord.

The truth is that the “neatly tied bow” we often long for in this life rarely exists. Instead, God invites us into something deeper. He invites us to sit with Him in the season.

Slowing down long enough to be present with the Lord changes everything. It means asking questions, listening for His voice, and allowing Him to speak into the places of our hearts that we often rush past.

Instead of trying to fix the situation, fix someone else, or even fix ourselves, we begin allowing Him to work in us first. This slow shaping of the heart is something I wrote about more deeply in another reflection called When Wisdom Shapes the Heart Before It Shapes Our Words.

Contentment in the “Already but Not Yet”

This season of my life has been one of the most beautiful seasons of growth I have ever experienced. God is showing me His character in ways I had never fully seen before. I am seeing His loving kindness, His daily mercies, and His compassion for my humanity and my need for Him.

I am discovering the depth of His love for me; a love so personal that He is patiently teaching me through His Word day by day. I have never felt so loved, and I have never felt so protected.

This season is vulnerable in many ways, but it is also deeply peaceful. I am learning what it truly means to abide in Him. My daily devotional time has become my favorite part of the day. Sometimes I feel like a child again, simply sitting with my Father and soaking in His goodness.

And through this season, I am realizing something important about contentment. Contentment does not mean every question is answered. Contentment does not mean every situation is resolved.

Contentment means my heart is learning to rest in Him while some things are still unfinished.

Holy Spirit’s Role in Our Longing

Paul reminds us that three kinds of groaning are happening in this world right now.

  1. Creation groans because the world is broken.
  2. Believers groan because we long for full restoration.
  3. Holy Spirit groans as He intercedes for us in the waiting.

All three of these groaning points to one truth: the story isn’t finished yet.

Holy Spirit does not remove our longing for the fullness of life with God. Instead, He comforts us within that longing and reminds us that glory is coming.

For the Woman Who Feels the Ache

If you are walking through a season where your heart feels heavy, where waiting feels long, or where life has not turned out the way you hoped, I want you to know something.

You are not alone. And your longing is not a sign that your faith is weak.

Sometimes longing is simply the evidence that your heart was created for eternity with God.

Holy Spirit's comfort sustains us while we wait.

Holy Spirit sees you. His presence brings the quiet Holy Spirit comfort your heart needs even now.

The groaning is real. But the story is not finished. And the glory that is coming will be far greater than anything we have had to endure here.

You are seen.
You are known.
And you are fiercely loved by God.

With love,
