3 Reasons We Need a Christian Perspective on Gossip Today

3 Reasons We Need a Christian Perspective on Gossip:

Gossip is one of the most overlooked sins in the church—and this week, we’re exploring a Christian perspective on gossip and why it matters so deeply to the heart of God. Understanding a Christian perspective on gossip helps us align our conversations with God’s heart instead of culture’s habits.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling unsettled—but couldn’t quite put your finger on why? Maybe something was said that felt... off. Or maybe you caught yourself nodding along to a story that left you wondering, "Should I have said something?"

Friend, I’ve been there too. And if I’m honest—I’ve been on both sides of the gossip fence.

There have been seasons when I was the one sharing details I didn’t need to share. I wasn’t trying to be hurtful. I told myself I was “processing,” or “just being honest.” But the truth is—I wasn’t guarding the heart or reputation of the person I was talking about.

And other times, I’ve been the one who sat silently while someone else said too much. It left a weight on my heart that didn’t sit right, because I knew the conversation didn’t honor the Lord.

That’s why Sarah and I felt so strongly about recording this episode of Spirit Filled Girl Talk. We’re not here to shame anyone—we’re here to shine a light on something subtle but spiritually serious. Gossip may seem harmless, but biblically, it’s described as partnering with the enemy. And I don’t want any part of that and I'm confident you don't either!

“Gossip destroys what God loves
by partnering with what He hates.”
- Pastor Landon Schott

Scripture doesn’t just caution against gossip—it exposes it for what it is: a tool of division, offense, and deception. Proverbs 6 lists gossip among the things God hates. And when I read that, I had to pause and ask myself: Do I hate what God hates? Or have I grown comfortable with something He calls destructive?

Here are 3 reasons we need a Christian perspective on gossip today:

  1. Gossip opens spiritual doors we’re not meant to walk through. Even listening to gossip can invite spiritual heaviness. It’s not passive—it’s participation.
  2. Gossip traps us in offense. The enemy uses it to stir division, bitterness, and mistrust in friendships, families, and churches.
  3. Gossip distances us from God’s heart. When we speak or entertain words that tear down, we grieve the Spirit—and often miss what God is doing in and through the person we’re talking about.

We also looked at the story of Stephen, in Acts 6–7—how he was gossiped about, slandered, and falsely accused. And yet, his response wasn’t to fight fire with fire—it was to stand in grace, wisdom, and truth. That kind of strength doesn’t come from personality or willpower. It comes from being filled with the Spirit.

When we recognize how destructive gossip can be—not just for others, but for our own spiritual lives—it changes the way we engage in conversation. It shifts our posture from passive listening to intentional love. As women who want to walk in truth and freedom, we can’t afford to be casual about our words.

Holy Spirit cares deeply about how we speak, because our words carry life—or they carry death (Proverbs 18:21). Choosing to walk away from gossip isn’t just about being “nice"—it’s about being holy. It’s about honoring God in the unseen places and choosing His approval over the crowd’s.

I hope this conversation about gossip on the podcast this week gives you deeper insight into why a Christian perspective on gossip isn’t just helpful—it’s holy.
